1 – Xanthan Gum

Xanthan? Does that sound natural to you? Is there a xanthan plant, a xanthan tree, or a xanthan herb? We placed this on the list first to show that what we think of when we consider “natural” products are not always what they seem.

Xanthan gum is a natural ingredient, one that is safe and effective at what it does. It is produced from introducing Xanthomonas campestris—a type of bacteria, to simple sugars which then creates xanthan gum through the process of fermentation.

Xanthan gum is used to stabilize many mixtures and prevent them from separating. It also serves to thicken mixtures. While it is natural and considered quite safe in both cosmetics and food products, a small number of individuals may experience digestive issues with various gum products such as carrageenan, cellulose, carob bean, etc.
